[2019 with DOS games] 50 Mission Crush / 221B Baker Street / 1830: Railroads & Robber Barons

Hello guys,

This is the twenty-seventh and last entry of the [2019 with DOS games] column, a mini-compendium of the mandatory MS-DOS games ever released. For a big part of my life I’ve been a PC games player and I had tons of old games to play with back in the 90s. This is my homage to them.

The rules are simple. MS-DOS has been created in 1981 and was still available in computer until the early Noughties. However the release of Windows 95 acted as a break and everything before immediately becaome. So I can fairly tell that the DOS era goes from 1981 until 1985. [2019 with DOS games] will feature every two weeks a selection of three games, one for every five-year period (1981-1985, 1986-1990 and 1991-1995) in alphabetilac order that I consider either important, ground-breaking or simply fun and easy to play. I’ll try to consider only DOS-exclusive games or in case games spread on different platforms that have the PC version as a flagship. No claim of completeness, I’m not a human encyclopedia (unfortunately…). Let’s go with numbers from 0 to 9.

Questa è la ventisettesima e ultima puntata della rubrica [2019 with DOS games], un mini-compendio dei migliori giochi per DOS rilasciati. Per gran parte della mia vista sono stato un giocatore da PC e avevo tonnellate di giochi con i quali giocare negli anni 90. Questo è il mio modo di omaggiarli.

Le regole sono semplici, l’MS-DOS è stato creato nel 1981 ed era ancora disponibile sui computer fino ai primi anni Duemila. Tuttavia il rilascio di Windows 95 ebbe un effetto di rottura e tutto ciò che esisteva prima, divenne immediatamente obsoleto. Per qusto posso dire con sufficiente certezza che l’era del DOS va dal 1981 al 1995. [2019 with DOS games] ogni due settimane includerà una selezione di tre giochi, uno per ogni lustro (1981-1985, 1986-1990 e 1991-1995) in ordine alfabetico che considero o importanti di per se o meritevoli per affezione personale. Cercherò di considerare solo giochi esclusivi per DOS o giochi per i quali il porting per DOS risulta essere il più importante. Non ho pretese di completezza. Sfortunatamente non sono un’enciclopedia umana. Via con i numeri da 0 a 9.

50 Mission Crush (1984)

Today’s first game is a strategy one and, as you can imagine, it has been distributed by SSI. We’re on a B-17 and we’re trying to make a career during the WWII. Differently from other games of the company, 50 Mission Crush is easier to pick up and play and way faster and it doesn’t need no long-term strategies. I still don’t know why SSI named it “role-playing game”…The game got mixed reviews, mainly for its lack of depth and also some quite negative reviews, down to an astonishing 30%.

Il primo gioco di oggi è un gioco di strategia e, come prevedibile, è stato distribuito dalla SSI. Siamo su un B-17 e stiamo cercando di far carriera durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Differentemente da altri titoli della compagnia, 50 Mission Crush è molto più rapido, veloce e intuittivo e non necessita di lunghe pianificazioni e obiettivi a lungo termine. Non capisco perchè la SSI lo abbia definito un “gioco di ruolo”, ma vabbè…Il gioco ricevette recensioni contrastanti, soprattutto per la sua mancanza di profondità fino ad alcune recensioni che si spinsero addirittura ad una valutazione attorno al 30%.

221B Baker Street (1988)

This incursion made by IntelliCreations in the world of Sherlock Holmes is actually a port of the board game with the same name. Up to 4 players can compete to solve some mysteries in the victorian London, each one embodying one of the different characters of Arthur Conan Doyle novels, namely Sherlock Holmes, Watson, Irene Adler and Inspector Lestrade. The game is quote true to the original and it’s necessary to collect clues all around the city to solve the case for ach one of the almost 30 different adventures.

Questa incursione della IntelliCreations nel mondo di Sherlock Holmes è in realtà un port dell’omonimo gioco da tavola. Fino a 4 giocatori possono competere per risolvere i misteri della Londra di epoca vittoriana, ciascuno impersonando uno dei differenti personaggi dei romanzi di Arthur Conan Doyle, val a dire Sherlock Holmes, Watson, Irene Adler e l’Ispettore Lestrade. Il gioco è abbastanza fedele all’originale ed è necessario collezionare indizi sparsi nella città per risolvere il caso per ognuna delle circa 30 differenti avventure disponibili.

1830: Railroads & Robber Barons (1994)

Another game whose origina are in a board game. The main goal is to create a railway and get the most out of it, making new tracks, buying trains etc…1830 is the classic game that blends simulation and strategy and it’s a damn good and intriguing game set in the northeast of the U.S. at the time of the second industrial revolution.. Simtext shows again its high potential and the care they put in the game paid off: the game received very good reviews, all around 80% (with the exception of a 40% from Next Generation) and although it hasn’t reached the 40k copies sold (at the time Avalon Hill’s record), it has been a good success for the company.

Un altro gioco che ha origine dall’omonimo gioco da tavola. L’obiettivo principale è quello di ottenere e far prosperare una linea ferroviaria, mettendo binari, comprando treni ecc…1830 è il classico gioco che mescola simulazione e strategia ed è un gioco dannatamente bello e intrigante ambientato nel nordest degli Stati Uniti al tempo della seconda rivoluzione industriale. La Simtex si dimostra una compagnia molto attenta allo sviluppo dei propri giochi e questa sua cura verrà ripagata nei numeri: il gioco ricevette ottime recensioni, tutte attorno all’80% (eccezion fatta il 40% di Next Generation) e sebbene non abbia raggiunto le 40mila copie (record dei tempi della Avalon Hill), si rivelò un campione di vendite per la software house.

Let’s start the honorable mentions with 1869, a trading game in which you embody a merchant in his task to buy and sell goods for a profits. In theory it’s no dissimilar to Machiavelly or my loved Ports of Call and that’s the reason why I love it. Plus it has smoother graphics.

Iniziamo le menzioni speciali con 1869, un trading game dove impersoniamo un mercante nel suo compito di comprare e vendere beni per ottenere un profitto. In teoria non è dissimile da Machiavelli o dal mio amato Ports of Call ed è proprio per questo che lo amo. In più ha una grafica migliore.

The last honorable mention of the year is for 5th fleet, a game I was dying to play when I was young and that my PC never had the strenght to run. It’s another transposition of a board game and I don’t know if it has ever been fun to play for you but for me it meant a lot when I was building my own gaming culture.

L’ultima menzione dell’anno è per 5th Fleet, un gioco che morivo dalla voglia di giocare da giovane e che il mio PC non ha mai avuto la forza di far girare. E’ un’altra trasposizione di un gioco da tavolo e non so se voi vi siate mai divertiti a giocarci ma per quanto mi ruguarda ha significato molto e ha comtribuito a creare la mia personale cultura videoludica.
