[2019 with DOS games] Xonix / Xenomorph / Xatax

Hello guys,

This is the twenty-fourth entry of the [2019 with DOS games] column, a mini-compendium of the mandatory MS-DOS games ever released. For a big part of my life I’ve been a PC games player and I had tons of old games to play with back in the 90s. This is my homage to them.

The rules are simple. MS-DOS has been created in 1981 and was still available in computer until the early Noughties. However the release of Windows 95 acted as a break and everything before immediately becaome. So I can fairly tell that the DOS era goes from 1981 until 1985. [2019 with DOS games] will feature every two weeks a selection of three games, one for every five-year period (1981-1985, 1986-1990 and 1991-1995) in alphabetilac order that I consider either important, ground-breaking or simply fun and easy to play. I’ll try to consider only DOS-exclusive games or in case games spread on different platforms that have the PC version as a flagship. No claim of completeness, I’m not a human encyclopedia (unfortunately…). Let’s go with letter X.

Questa è la ventiquattresima puntata della rubrica [2019 with DOS games], un mini-compendio dei migliori giochi per DOS rilasciati. Per gran parte della mia vista sono stato un giocatore da PC e avevo tonnellate di giochi con i quali giocare negli anni 90. Questo è il mio modo di omaggiarli.

Le regole sono semplici, l’MS-DOS è stato creato nel 1981 ed era ancora disponibile sui computer fino ai primi anni Duemila. Tuttavia il rilascio di Windows 95 ebbe un effetto di rottura e tutto ciò che esisteva prima, divenne immediatamente obsoleto. Per qusto posso dire con sufficiente certezza che l’era del DOS va dal 1981 al 1995. [2019 with DOS games] ogni due settimane includerà una selezione di tre giochi, uno per ogni lustro (1981-1985, 1986-1990 e 1991-1995) in ordine alfabetico che considero o importanti di per se o meritevoli per affezione personale. Cercherò di considerare solo giochi esclusivi per DOS o giochi per i quali il porting per DOS risulta essere il più importante. Non ho pretese di completezza. Sfortunatamente non sono un’enciclopedia umana. Via con la lettera X.

Xonix (1984)

Crude graphics, Qix-ian inspiration and pseudo-amatorial development gives as a result Xonix, the first game featured today. It has never been officialy distributed but some version started to appear on other platforms in the following years (like the C64 version in 1987). Xonix will be the “base” for Antixonix that will become Dmitry Pavlovsky’s Antix.

Grafica cruda, gioco pseudoamatoriale e ispirazione Qix-iana fanno di Xonix il primo gioco del giorno. Non fu mai ufficialmente distribuito ma alcune versioni sono apparse negli anni su altre piattaforme (come la vesione per C64 del 1987). Xonix sarà la “base” del gioco Antixonic che diventerà l’Antix di Dmitry Pavlovsky.

Xenomorph (1990)

As you can imagine by the title, Xenomorph is a game that owes a lot to the Alien franchise, although the visuals are directly taken from the games of the Dungeon Master series. The game was widely praised with reviews over 80% although some pointed out that during the game it’s easy to get lost while on a mission. But isn’t it a key pont of exploring a wrecked spaceship?

Come potrete immaginare dal titolo, Xenomorph deve molto al franchise Alien, anche se a livello visivo ha molti punti in comune con i giochi della serie Dungeon Master. Fu universalmente ben recepito, con recensioni oltre l’80%, anche se alcuni puntarono il dito sul fatto che spesso fosse difficile perdersi durante la missione. Ma ciò non dovrebbe essere un punto chiave nell’esplorazione di una navicella danneggiata?

Xatax (1994)

Genre: Graphic Shoot Em Up

Your usual mediocre space shooter, the latest clone or copypaste of the classic R-Type, Gradius, Life Force etc. The 16-bit style is a bit meagre and the game surely doesn’t shine fo its “soul” but if you have nothing better to do and you’re dying to play a game with X…

Il vostro umile e solito space shooter, ennesimo clone o scopiazzatura dei vari R-Type, Gradius, Life Force eccetera. Lo stile 16-bit è però scarno e il gioco non brilla particolarmente per la sua “anima” ma se proprio non avete meglio da fare e non vedete l’ora di giocare ad un gioco con la X…

As you could imagine, letter X has little to offer if not space themed games. The only one that stands out of the crowd is X-Men Children of the Atom that, even though has arrived a bit late (is from 1997) gain the crown of the only honorable mention of the day. If you love Marvel Universe and you’ver had fun with Marvel vs. Capcom you could try its grandfather that includes the most famous among the X-Men, Colossun, Cyclops, Iceman, Psylocke, Storm and, of course, Wolverine.

Come potevate prevedere, la lettera X ha poco da offrire se non giochi a tema spaziale. L’unico che emerge dal gruppo è quindi X-Men: Children of the Atom che, anche se arrivato un po’ fuori tempo massimo (è dl 1997) si guadagna la palma dell’unica honorable mention del giorno. Se siete amanti dell’unnverso Marvel e vi siete divertiti con Marvel Vs. Capcom potreste dare un’occhiata a suo “nonno” che include i più famosi tra gli X-Men, Colosso, Ciclope, Uomo Ghiaccio, Psylocke, Tempesta e, ovviamente, Wolverine.
