[2019 with DOS games] Voyager I: Sabotage of the Robot Ship / Venom / Veil of Darkness

This is the twenty-second entry of the [2019 with DOS games] column, a mini-compendium of the mandatory MS-DOS games ever released. For a big part of my life I’ve been a PC games player and I had tons of old games to play with back in the 90s. This is my homage to them.

The rules are simple. MS-DOS has been created in 1981 and was still available in computer until the early Noughties. However the release of Windows 95 acted as a break and everything before immediately becaome. So I can fairly tell that the DOS era goes from 1981 until 1985. [2019 with DOS games] will feature every two weeks a selection of three games, one for every five-year period (1981-1985, 1986-1990 and 1991-1995) in alphabetilac order that I consider either important, ground-breaking or simply fun and easy to play. I’ll try to consider only DOS-exclusive games or in case games spread on different platforms that have the PC version as a flagship. No claim of completeness, I’m not a human encyclopedia (unfortunately…). Let’s go with letter V.

Questa è la diciottesima puntata della rubrica [2019 with DOS games], un mini-compendio dei migliori giochi per DOS rilasciati. Per gran parte della mia vista sono stato un giocatore da PC e avevo tonnellate di giochi con i quali giocare negli anni 90. Questo è il mio modo di omaggiarli.

Le regole sono semplici, l’MS-DOS è stato creato nel 1981 ed era ancora disponibile sui computer fino ai primi anni Duemila. Tuttavia il rilascio di Windows 95 ebbe un effetto di rottura e tutto ciò che esisteva prima, divenne immediatamente obsoleto. Per qusto posso dire con sufficiente certezza che l’era del DOS va dal 1981 al 1995. [2019 with DOS games] ogni due settimane includerà una selezione di tre giochi, uno per ogni lustro (1981-1985, 1986-1990 e 1991-1995) in ordine alfabetico che considero o importanti di per se o meritevoli per affezione personale. Cercherò di considerare solo giochi esclusivi per DOS o giochi per i quali il porting per DOS risulta essere il più importante. Non ho pretese di completezza. Sfortunatamente non sono un’enciclopedia umana. Via con la lettera V.

Venom is a sort of link between the first graphic adventures and the point and click, giving the fact that it has a menu that can be browsed via keyboard or joystick where it’s possible to select a set of commands to give our protagonist. Regarding the plot, the people at Softel didn’t put so many efforts since we’re talking about the same old who-knows-who who defeated an evil who-knows-who condemning him to eternal damnation except for the fact that he’s back again to settle the score and we’re in the troublesome position of the thero who has to save everybody’s ass. Rather straightforward I’d say, but there wasn’t something really better than this back then, at least with letter V…

Venom è una sorta di anello di congiunzione tra le prime avventure grafiche e le avventure punta e clicca, dal momento che ha un menu che può essere navigato con tastiera o joystick dove è possibile selezionare un set di azioni da far compiere al nostro protagonista. Per quanto riguarda la storia alla Softel non è che si siano impegnati proprio alla grande visto che si parla sempre di qualcuno che sconfigge qualcun altro di malvagio e lo relega alla dannazione eterna se non fosse per il fatto che questo poi ciccia fuori di nuovo per regolare i conti e noi ci ritroviamo nella scomodas posizione dell’eroe che deve salvare il culo a tutti. Abbastanza lineare direi, ma non è che ci fossero cose così migliori in quegli anni, perlomeno con la lettera V…

Veil of Darkness (1993)

Ah, the horror, the adventure, the isometry! Veil of Darkness has in theory everything I could ask for from a game: it has the horror element since our protagonist find himself in Romania where there’s a vampire wandering (the story blinks even too much to the legend of Dracula; P.: check out my review of the true Dracula here), the adventure, a grapchic all in all fluid and interesting and my loved isometric visual. Surely is not my favourite game, but depite being not so long, Veil of Darness is surely a game good anough and that deserves at least a try. Someone consider it a sort of ancestor-forefather of a series of isometric RPGs that goes from Diablo, through Ba.dur’s Gate till Planescape: Torment; maybe no, but’s it’s good to think it…

Ah, l’horror, l’avventura, l’isometria! Veil of Darkness in teoria ha tutto quello che potrei amare in un gioco: ha l’elemento horror visto che il nostro protagonista si ritrova in Romania dove si aggira un vampiro (la strizzata d’occhio alla leggenda di Dracula è più che evidente; P.S leggetevi la recensione del vero Dracula qui), l’avventura, una grafica tutto sommato fluida e interessante e la mia amatissima visuale isometrica. Non sarà certo il mio gioco preferito, ma nonostante la lunghezza non eccessiva, Veil of Darkness è sicuramente un titolo che non sfigura e che merita quantomeno una giocata. Da alcuni è ritenuto una sorta di precursore-bisnonno di tutta una serie di RPG isometrici che passano da Diablo a Baldur’s Gate a Planescape: Torment; forse no, ma è bello crederci…

Today we only have three games among the honorable mentions regarding letter V and the first one is Vette!, great racing game based on the immortal Chevrolet Corvette featuring a peculiar multiplayer mode allowing to physical connect two PCs (a bit complicated for the time…) Back then was a great success and the critics considered it one of the best simulation games perhaps even for its fully 3D San Francisco setting.

Oggi abbiamo solo tre giochi tra le menzioni onorevoli per quanto riguarda la lettera V e il primo è Vette!, gran gioco di corse basato sull’immortale Chevrolet Corvette e dotato di modalità multiplayer connettendo via cavo due PC (un po’ complicato per l’epoca…). Ai tempi fu un gran successo e da più parti fu giudicato come uno dei migliori simuatori in circolazione anche, forse, per l’ambientazione di San Francisco ricreata in 3D.

The second game is Virtuoso, widely considered an awful game. Actually yes, it’s quite bad and surely having as a protagonist a rockstar fighting in a virtual reality world seems at least risky. But this is what I had back then and this is what I could play, even though even in the 90s I considered it an horrible game…

Il secondo gioco è Virtuoso, spesso considerato un pessimo gioco. In effetti non è tutto sto granchè e di sicuro avere come protagonista una rockstar che combatte in una realtà virtuale sembra quantomeno una cosa azzardata. Ma tant’è, questo avevo e a questo dovevo giocare, anche se già ai tempi lo reputavo un gioco orribile…

Last game of the bunch is Voyeur I had the pleasure (?) to play last year on the CD-i (actually I can’t really brag about it) but that I’ve played also a long time ago on PC. Back then I didn’t understand a single word in english so I mainly used to click random things but to me the game was a m ere excuse to see things that for a 9 years old boy were forbidden and close to pure pornography.

Ultimo della compagnia è Voyeur che ho avuto il piacere (?) di giocare ultimamente anche su CD-i (non che io me ne possa vantare) ma che avevo giocato anche tempo fa su PC. Non capendo una cippa di inglese ai tempi più che altro cliccavo cose a caso ma per me il gioco era una scusa per vedere cose che per un ragazzo di 9 anni sembravano pornografia pura.
