[2019 with DOS games] Yahtzee / Yes Prime Minister: The Computer Game / Yendorian Tales: Book I

Hello guys,

This is the twenty-fifth entry of the [2019 with DOS games] column, a mini-compendium of the mandatory MS-DOS games ever released. For a big part of my life I’ve been a PC games player and I had tons of old games to play with back in the 90s. This is my homage to them.

The rules are simple. MS-DOS has been created in 1981 and was still available in computer until the early Noughties. However the release of Windows 95 acted as a break and everything before immediately becaome. So I can fairly tell that the DOS era goes from 1981 until 1985. [2019 with DOS games] will feature every two weeks a selection of three games, one for every five-year period (1981-1985, 1986-1990 and 1991-1995) in alphabetilac order that I consider either important, ground-breaking or simply fun and easy to play. I’ll try to consider only DOS-exclusive games or in case games spread on different platforms that have the PC version as a flagship. No claim of completeness, I’m not a human encyclopedia (unfortunately…). Let’s go with letter Y.

Questa è la venticinquesima puntata della rubrica [2019 with DOS games], un mini-compendio dei migliori giochi per DOS rilasciati. Per gran parte della mia vista sono stato un giocatore da PC e avevo tonnellate di giochi con i quali giocare negli anni 90. Questo è il mio modo di omaggiarli.

Le regole sono semplici, l’MS-DOS è stato creato nel 1981 ed era ancora disponibile sui computer fino ai primi anni Duemila. Tuttavia il rilascio di Windows 95 ebbe un effetto di rottura e tutto ciò che esisteva prima, divenne immediatamente obsoleto. Per qusto posso dire con sufficiente certezza che l’era del DOS va dal 1981 al 1995. [2019 with DOS games] ogni due settimane includerà una selezione di tre giochi, uno per ogni lustro (1981-1985, 1986-1990 e 1991-1995) in ordine alfabetico che considero o importanti di per se o meritevoli per affezione personale. Cercherò di considerare solo giochi esclusivi per DOS o giochi per i quali il porting per DOS risulta essere il più importante. Non ho pretese di completezza. Sfortunatamente non sono un’enciclopedia umana. Via con la lettera Y.

Yahtzee (1983)

Yahtzee is probably thje earliest PC version of the famous (?) dice game that I know only for having played a version called Yacht for Win 3.11. Giving the semplicity of the concept there was no need for particular “horse power” to develop the game therefore everything is visually quite crude, made with ASCII characters, in pure old black and white. So, nothing particular, it’s Yahtzee…

Yahtzee è probabilmente la versione più vecchia per computer del famoso (?) gioco di dadi che io ho conosciuto solo grazie ad un giochino per Win 3.11 (Yacht). Data la semplicità delle regole non servivano molti “cavalli” per sviluppare il gioco, quindi il tutto è confezionato in veste (molto rude) di caratteri ASCII, in puro vecchio bianco e nero. Insomma niente di particolare, è Yahtzee…

Yes Prime Minister: The Computer Game (1988)

We’re around election time, at least for the colleagues of United Kingdom, but I swear this is a pure coincidence. Moreover Yes Prime Minister: The Computer Game is a simulation of a week in the role of Prime Minister Jim Hacker, as in the TV show Yes Prime Minister that was airing on BBC. As so it’s more enjoyable for the native speakers who know the show, otherwise you might as well try Balance of Power…

Siamo in periodo di elezioni, almeno per quanto riguarda i colleghi del Regno Unito, ma giuro che la coincidenza è puramente casuale. Oltretutto Yes Prime Minister: The Computer Game è proprio una simulazione di una settimana nei panni del primo ministro Jim Hacker, come nella serie Yes Prime Minister in onda ai tempi sulla BBC. Come tale è molto più godibile per i madrelingua che conoscono la serie, altrimenti tanto vale buttarsi su Balance of Power…

Yendorian Tales: Book I (1994)

Genre: Fantasy RPG

This is your classic top down fantasy RPG that looks like Gauntlet and plays (almost) like the early Ultima games. It spawned two sequels, always made by Spectrum Pacific, Yendorian Tales: Book I – Chapter 2 in 1996 and Yendorian Tales: The Tyrants of Thaine in 1997.

This time not only there are no honorable mentions, but it has been a tragedy to FIND at least one game per period. And they’re so unknown games that they don’t even have an official DOS cover (I’m sorry for the cover of Yes Prime Minister taken by the Spectrum version). Well, what did you expect from letter Y? Come on, next week, despite letter Z we’ll have at least something to show…

Questa volta non solo non ci sono menzioni d’onore ma è stata una tragedia RIUSCIRE trovare un gioco per quinquennio. E sono giochi così sperduti nei meandri della storia che non hanno neanche una cover ufficiale per DOS (chiedo scusa per la cover di Yes Prime Minister presa dallo Spectrum). Beh, cosa vi aspettavate dalla Y? Dai, su che la settimana prossima nonostante la lettera Z riusciamo a cavare qualcosa dal buco…
