[2019 with DOS games] Questprobe / Quest for Glory II: Trials by Fire / Quarantine

Hello guys,

This is the seventeenth entry of the [2019 with DOS games] column, a mini-compendium of the mandatory MS-DOS games ever released. For a big part of my life I’ve been a PC games player and I had tons of old games to play with back in the 90s. This is my homage to them.

The rules are simple. MS-DOS has been created in 1981 and was still available in computer until the early Noughties. However the release of Windows 95 acted as a break and everything before immediately became obsolete. So I can fairly tell that the DOS era goes from 1981 until 1985. [2019 with DOS games] will feature every two weeks a selection of three games, one for every five-year period (1981-1985, 1986-1990 and 1991-1995) in alphabetical order that I consider either important, ground-breaking or simply fun and easy to play. I’ll try to consider only DOS-exclusive games or in case games spread on different platforms that have the PC version as a flagship. No claim of completeness, I’m not a human encyclopedia (unfortunately…). Let’s go with letter Q.

Questa è la diciassettesima puntata della rubrica [2019 with DOS games], un mini-compendio dei migliori giochi per DOS rilasciati. Per gran parte della mia vista sono stato un giocatore da PC e avevo tonnellate di giochi con i quali giocare negli anni 90. Questo è il mio modo di omaggiarli.

Le regole sono semplici, l’MS-DOS è stato creato nel 1981 ed era ancora disponibile sui computer fino ai primi anni Duemila. Tuttavia il rilascio di Windows 95 ebbe un effetto di rottura e tutto ciò che esisteva prima, divenne immediatamente obsoleto. Per qusto posso dire con sufficiente certezza che l’era del DOS va dal 1981 al 1995. [2019 with DOS games] ogni due settimane includerà una selezione di tre giochi, uno per ogni lustro (1981-1985, 1986-1990 e 1991-1995) in ordine alfabetico che considero o importanti di per se o meritevoli per affezione personale. Cercherò di considerare solo giochi esclusivi per DOS o giochi per i quali il porting per DOS risulta essere il più importante. Non ho pretese di completezza. Sfortunatamente non sono un’enciclopedia umana. Via con la lettera Q.

Questprobe (1984)

When Marvel still wasn’t the cash machine it is nowadays with 9 figures incomes, superheroes were relegated in a small nerd niche. Probably the same nerds who taught themselves to code in the early 80s and the same who had the idea for Questprobe a.k.a. Questprobe Featuring The Hulk. The game is part of a never completed series and is an interactive fiction that sees our irascible green buddy struggling with his forced captivity from which he has to break free. The idea of the Questprobe series would have made millions of teens drool if only comics had been so popular back then as they are now, 35 years later. The following chapters of the saga were Questprobe Featuring Spider-Man (1984) e Questprobe Featuring Human Torch and the Thing (1985). If only the time were ripe…

Quando la Marvel era ancora ben lontana dall’essere la macina successi con incassi a nove zeri che è oggi, i supereroi erano relegati in una nicchia da nerd. Gli stessi nerd che probabilmente impararono a programmare nei primi anni 80 e che probabilmente ebbero l’idea per Questprobe, noto anche come Questprobe Featuring The Hulk. Il gioco, parte di una saga Questprobe mai completata è un’avventura testuale che vede il nostro irascibile amico verde alle prese con la sua prigionia forzata dalla quale deve liberarsi. L’idea della serie Questprobe avrebbe fatto sbavare milioni di adolescenti, se solo i fumetti fossero stati così popolari come oggi 35 anni fa. I capitoli successivi furono Questprobe Featuring Spider-Man (1984) e Questprobe Featuring Human Torch and the Thing (1985). Se solo i tempi fossero stati maturi…

Quest for Glory II: Trials by Fire (1990)

The second game featured today is actually the first Quest for Glory, despite number “II” in the title, since the first game in the series was Hero’s Quest. Sierra repropose more or less the same kind of adventure despite some clear graphics enhancements and some innovations in the gameplay: the plot takes place in a 30-days frame and some puzzles can be solved only in particular moments; there are also some RPG typical elements, like the possibility to advance the character. The game received mixed reviews but in general it was well received by the public; in 2011 Adventure Gamers named Quest for Glory II the 81st best adventure game ever released.

Il secondo gioco di oggi è il realtà il primo Quest for Glory, nonostante il numero “II” nel titolo, dato che il primo gioco era in realtà Hero’s Quest. La Sierra ripropone bene o male lo stesso canovaccio ma ci sono evidenti migliorie grafiche e alcune innovazioni nel gameplay: la trama si svolge nell’arco di 30 giorni e alcuni enigmi possono essere risolti solo in determinati momenti; sono inoltre presenti alcuni elementi tipici degli RPG come l’avanzamento del personaggio. Il gioco ricevette recensioni contrastanti ma in generale fu apprezzato dal pubblico; nel 2011 Adventure Gamers nominò Quest for Glory II l’81ma miglior avventura mai realizzata.

Quarantine (1994)

If Carmageddon in 1997 created a driving sub-genre that as of today has never been replicated even though some dynamics served in latter succesful games (like Grand Theft Auto), is thanks to the humble Quarantine that we had the first Mad Max-like video game, full of blood, pimped cars and pedestrians squashed like mosquitos.

Se Carmageddon nel 1997 ha creato un genere di gioco di guida che ad oggi non è stato praticamente mai riproposto, anche se alcune sue dinamiche sono entrate a par parte in giochi anche di successo (vedi Grand Theft Auto), fu merito dell’umile predecessore Quarantine ad inaugurare l’atmosfesra alla MAd Max fatta di macchine truccate, criminali e pedoni spiaccicati come zanzare

Letter Q doesn’t leave too much room for imagination therefore the only honorable mention in Quake, which is not in the top-3 just because is slightly out of time. It was the last id Software game to be released as a shareware product and is widely considered the spiritual successor of Doom; it represents a fundamental step in the story of FPS games, especially concerning the multiplayer section.

La lettera Q non lascia molto spazio allì’immaginazione e pertanto l’unica menzione onorevole è Quake, non inserito nella top-three perchè è un gioco leggermente fuori tempo massimo. Fu l’ultimo prodotto realizzato dalla id Software come shareware ed è considerato il successore spirituale di Doom; rappresenta una tappa fondamentale nella storia degli FPS, specie per quanto concerne la sezione multiplayer.
