Hi guys,
Today’s post is dedicated to one of the main characters of the golden era (MY golden era) of personal computer. The three and a half most important inches of a boy life and the only 3,5 inches a girl could love. So don’t think about the measures below your belt and let your memory flies back to the Eighties when SONY showed to the world the new data storage standard, the 3,5″ Floppy Disk that still nowadays is one of the most iconic images of computer history, so easy-to-use and so successfull that still today is the symbol of the data storage, despite during the years it was outclassed by the CD-ROM, then by the DVD-ROM and lately by the USB Key.
I would like to take the opportunity to open a little contest among all you followers and readers and ask you to submit the pictures of your Floppy Disks, no matter if they are the original installation floppies of your favourite video game or the used and abused vaults for all of your important files.
So post pics of your beloved Floppy as a reply to this post you can find on the Facebook page I ❤ Old Games! ot replying to this tweet indicating also the name of your blog (obviously if you have one) and a brief description of the content of the Floppy itself; soon I will publish a thanksgiving article with the pictures received so thank you now for your support!

An interesting idea, it sounds like a Fallout quest when you search for disks with lost pre-War knowledge. Too bad the only floppy disk I have is about ten years old, I have no idea about its content and no means to check it. But I’ll follow you to see what the others have 😉

Wish I could. Used to have some awesome ones with coloured transparent plastic, so you could see the actual media inside. But alas I got rid of them all years ago in a huge clear out. Kind of regret that now 😦

It’s very unlikely I’m afraid, unless one is hidden away somewhere in my parent’s house, which is hundreds of miles away from where I live now! Used to get some great novelty floppies on the front of Amiga Format magazine.

Ooooooh! I’ll have to look in my office when I get home from work for my childhood disks. I hope I didn’t throw them out years ago. I might even see if I can dig up some 5.25″ ones from my old BBC if they’re in there.

I couldn’t find any, think I must have gotten rid of them. I did find an old 5.25″ drive though!

You know, its so funny, because whenever I mention a floppy disk to people of my generation, they give me confused looks. I used them when I was in third and fourth grade, but it seems like that kind of technology was phasing out just as soon as I had been introduced to it. It’s cool to see somebody actually understand what a floppy is.

I cannot imagine a person who never ever saw a floppy disk. They’re a piece of history!!! I hope someday someone will invent a USB-like storage drive in the shape of a 3,5″ or even 5″ floppy, maybe instead of SD drive…

Heh, that would be neat, I think. I would say something along the lines of “but the appeal of a USB drive is it’s compact size, whereas a floppy is too large”, but I lose my USB’s all the time *because* They’re so small!
