[2020 with Windows games] Men in Black / Max Payne / Mass Effect

Hello guys,

This is the twelfth entry of the [2020 with Windows games] column, a mini-compendium of the mandatory Windows games ever released. For a big part of my life I’ve been a PC games player and I had tons of old games to play with back in the 00s. This is my homage to them.

The rules are simple. Windows rose to a wordwide popularity with the release of Windows 95 in 1995. After this years all of the DOS games became obsolete and Windows impose itself as operative system in the new PCs. As it was for last yeasr column dedicated to DOS games, even for Windows games we will have a selection of three games, one for every five-year period (1995-1999, 2000-2004 e 2005-2009) in alphabetilac order that I consider either important, ground-breaking or simply fun and easy to play. I’ll try to consider only Windows-exclusive games or, in case, games spread on different platforms that have the PC version as a flagship. No claim of completeness, I’m not a human encyclopedia (unfortunately…). Let’s go with letter L.

Questa è la dodicesimapuntata della rubrica [2020 with Windows games], un mini-compendio dei migliori giochi per Windows rilasciati. Per gran parte della mia vista sono stato un giocatore da PC e avevo tonnellate di giochi con i quali giocare negli anni Duemila. Questo è il mio modo di omaggiarli.

Le regole sono semplici, Windows ha raggiunto la fama mondiale con il rilascio di Windows 95 nel 1995. Da lì in poi tutti i giochi per DOS divennero obsoleti e Windows si impose come sistema operativo nei computer. Come per la rubrica dello scorso anno dedicata al DOS, anche per i giochi per Windows prendo in considerazione tre giochi, uno per ogni lustro (1995-1999, 2000-2004 e 2005-2009) in ordine alfabetico che considero o importanti di per se o meritevoli per affezione personale. Cercherò di considerare solo giochi esclusivi per Windows o giochi per i quali il porting per Windows risulta essere il più importante. Non ho pretese di completezza. Sfortunatamente non sono un’enciclopedia umana. Via con la lettera L.

Men in Black: The Game (1997)

I’ve never been a huge fan of aliens in movies but I loved MiB and I loved the game as well, a sort of adventure I thought it was not worth a penny but it turned out to be quite intriguing. I found the game in a compilation, I don’t know which one, but it quickly became the main game on that CD and I played it a lot, although I’ve never completed it.

Non sono mai stato un grande fan dei film sugli alieni ma MiB mi piacque un sacco, tanto quanto il gioco, una sorta di avventura al quale non avrei dato una lira e che invece mi coinvolse molto. Trovai il gioco in non mi ricordo quale compilation ma divenne in breve tempo il gioco di riferimento di quel CD e ci giocai per parecchio tempo, senza mai riuscire a finirlo.

Max Payne (2001)

The FPS genre between the 90s and the 00s was a real atomic bomb and some of the best games ever made have been created in a spawn of several years. One of those was Max Payne and its lisergic setting was kinda disturbing. I’ll never forget the oniric horror scene with a baby crying as a background noise…

Il genere FPS a cavallo del nuovo millennio era un’autemtica bomba atomica e furono sfornati alcuni dei più bei giochi mai fatti e non solo di quel genere. Max Payne fu uno di questi e il suo ambiente lisergico riusciva anche ad essere inquietante. Non dimenticherò mai la scena onirica horror con il pianto del bambino in sottofondo…

Mass Effect (2008)

Genre: Action, RPG

Tra i giochi del nuovo millennio forse Mass Effect è uno di quelli che mi ha colpito maggiormente, forse per il genere misto tra FPS, Action e RPG che mi ricorda tanto Deus Ex, uno dei miei giochi preferiti di tutti i tempi. Ho giocato prima la versione per Xbox di quella per Windows ma non sono così hardcore da dire che una sia meglio dell’altra…

Among the games of the new millenniun, Mass Effect is probably among the ones that impressed me the most, maybe for its genre, a mixture of Action, RPG and FPS that remind me a lot of Deus Ex, one of my favourites games of all time. I’ve first tried the Xbox version and only later the Windows one, but I’m not that hardcore gamer to tell if one version is better than the other…
