[2020 with Windows games] Grand Theft Auto / GTA III / Gun

Hello guys,

This is the seventh entry of the [2020 with Windows games] column, a mini-compendium of the mandatory Windows games ever released. For a big part of my life I’ve been a PC games player and I had tons of old games to play with back in the 00s. This is my homage to them.

The rules are simple. Windows rose to a wordwide popularity with the release of Windows 95 in 1995. After this years all of the DOS games became obsolete and Windows impose itself as operative system in the new PCs. As it was for last yeasr column dedicated to DOS games, even for Windows games we will have a selection of three games, one for every five-year period (1995-1999, 2000-2004 e 2005-2009) in alphabetilac order that I consider either important, ground-breaking or simply fun and easy to play. I’ll try to consider only Windows-exclusive games or, in case, games spread on different platforms that have the PC version as a flagship. No claim of completeness, I’m not a human encyclopedia (unfortunately…). Let’s go with letter G.

Questa è la settima puntata della rubrica [2020 with Windows games], un mini-compendio dei migliori giochi per Windows rilasciati. Per gran parte della mia vista sono stato un giocatore da PC e avevo tonnellate di giochi con i quali giocare negli anni Duemila. Questo è il mio modo di omaggiarli.

Le regole sono semplici, Windows ha raggiunto la fama mondiale con il rilascio di Windows 95 nel 1995. Da lì in poi tutti i giochi per DOS divennero obsoleti e Windows si impose come sistema operativo nei computer. Come per la rubrica dello scorso anno dedicata al DOS, anche per i giochi per Windows prendo in considerazione tre giochi, uno per ogni lustro (1995-1999, 2000-2004 e 2005-2009) in ordine alfabetico che considero o importanti di per se o meritevoli per affezione personale. Cercherò di considerare solo giochi esclusivi per Windows o giochi per i quali il porting per Windows risulta essere il più importante. Non ho pretese di completezza. Sfortunatamente non sono un’enciclopedia umana. Via con la lettera G.

Grand Theft Auto (1997)

The original GTA was surely a game changer and revamped the legitimacy of violence in video games. But we don’t give a damn about this legal stuff and we all enjoyed stealing our first car and doing our first Gouranga. And respect the honorable Uncle Fu.

L’originale GTA fu sicuramente un gioco che cambiò le regole e ripropose anche la questione della violenza nei videogiochi. Ma a noi non frega nulla di queste beghe legali e ci siamo tutti divertiti un casino a rubare la nostra prima auto e a fare il nostro primo Gouranga. E onore al venerabile Zio Fu.

GTA III (2001)

Ok, maybe it’s too easy to put two games of the same series in this column bur frankly it wouldn’t be fair not to include both the first GTA and the third that revamped the love for the PS” and boosted it sales. Il relation of the first two chapters, GTA III was a revolution in the graphics, in the story and in the gameplay and still today is the game that more than other contributed to the GTA phenomenon as we know it today.

Ok, forse è troppo facile mettere due giochi della stessa serie insieme in questa rubrica ma obiettivamente non sarebbe stato giusto nè escludere il primo GTA e nemmeno il terzo capitolo che riaccese l’amore per la PS2 e contribuì al rilancio delle sue vendite. Rispetto ai primi due capitoli della serie, GTA III fu una rivoluzione sia di grafica che di storia che di gameplay ed è ancora oggi il capitolo che forse più di tutti ha contribuito al fenomeno GTA quale è oggi.

Gun (2005)

Genre: Shooter, RPG

Spesso Gun è considerato come un GTA ambientato nel West perchè per il suo ambiente open world e può essere considerato in qualche modo una sorta di progenitore di Red Dead Redemption. Ebbe anche un buon successo, fu lodato dalla critiva e vendette 1.4 milioni di copie. GameSpy lo nominò Xbox 360 Action Game of the Year.

Sometimes Gun is considered like a GTA in the West because of its open world environment and could be considered in some ways as a forefather of Red Dead Redemption. It was a quite successful game, praised by the critics that went on to sell 1.4 millions of copies. GameSpy named it Xbox 360 Action Game of the Year.
