[2020 with Windows games] Doom II / Deus Ex / Driv3r

Hello guys,

This is the third entry of the [2020 with Windows games] column, a mini-compendium of the mandatory Windows games ever released. For a big part of my life I’ve been a PC games player and I had tons of old games to play with back in the 00s. This is my homage to them.

The rules are simple. Windows rose to a wordwide popularity with the release of Windows 95 in 1995. After this years all of the DOS games became obsolete and Windows impose itself as operative system in the new PCs. As it was for last yeasr column dedicated to DOS games, even for Windows games we will have a selection of three games, one for every five-year period (1995-1999, 2000-2004 e 2005-2009) in alphabetilac order that I consider either important, ground-breaking or simply fun and easy to play. I’ll try to consider only Windows-exclusive games or, in case, games spread on different platforms that have the PC version as a flagship. No claim of completeness, I’m not a human encyclopedia (unfortunately…). Let’s go with letter D.

Questa è la terza puntata della rubrica [2020 with Windows games], un mini-compendio dei migliori giochi per Windows rilasciati. Per gran parte della mia vista sono stato un giocatore da PC e avevo tonnellate di giochi con i quali giocare negli anni Duemila. Questo è il mio modo di omaggiarli.

Le regole sono semplici, Windows ha raggiunto la fama mondiale con il rilascio di Windows 95 nel 1995. Da lì in poi tutti i giochi per DOS divennero obsoleti e Windows si impose come sistema operativo nei computer. Come per la rubrica dello scorso anno dedicata al DOS, anche per i giochi per Windows prendo in considerazione tre giochi, uno per ogni lustro (1995-1999, 2000-2004 e 2005-2009) in ordine alfabetico che considero o importanti di per se o meritevoli per affezione personale. Cercherò di considerare solo giochi esclusivi per Windows o giochi per i quali il porting per Windows risulta essere il più importante. Non ho pretese di completezza. Sfortunatamente non sono un’enciclopedia umana. Via con la lettera D.

Doom II (1995)

It would have been too much not featuring Doom in this list. As it frequently happens in my gaming history, this is the first game I’ve played of the Doom series (yes, before the first…) and it was the one which made me fond of the series and, of course, of the FPS genre: it’s no coincidence that immediately after Doom II I’ve played Duke Nukem 3D. Giving the fact that back then I wasn’t so good with shooters I frequently ended up cheating using the good old IDKFA and IDDQD that have been engraved in my mind forever. Is useless to say that the game was and extraordinary success that earned id Software a loot fo 2 millions of copies sold.

Sarebbe stato un torto non includere il secondo Doom in questa lista. Come spesso accade nella mia vita da giocatore, questo è stato il primo capitolo della serie di Doom da me giocato (sì, prima del primo…) ed è stato quello che mi ha fatto appassionare alla saga di Doom in primis e poi al genere FPS: non è un caso che subito dopo Doom II per me venne Duke Nukem 3D. Visto che ai tempi non è che fossi proprio un mago degli sparatutto mi sono ridotto più di una volta a fare uso dei cari vecchi IKKFA e IDDQD che mi sono entrati in tesa marchiati a fuoco per non uscirne più. Inutile dire che il gioco fu un successo enorme e fruttò alla id Software un bottino di 2 milioni di copie vendute.

Deus Ex (2000)

Moving on in my own personal history with FPS, after Doom II and Duke Nukem 3D I got myself a break from the genre just to come back to in in the Noughties with the mileston Half-Life represented back then. In the same period I also tried Deus Ex and even this time it was love at first sight. The great inventory of weapons and items, the possibility to customize the protagonist as we were in an RPG were the thigns that really caught me in the game. But I’m not the one who loved it: in 2007 PC Zone named it best PC game of all time, followed by PC Gamer in 2011. Thanks to its great success, Deus Ex spawned several sequels, the last of which, Mankind Divided, came out in 2016.

Proseguendo nella mia personalissima storia degli FPS, dopo Doom II e Duke Nukem 3D mi ero preso una pausa dal genere prima di reinoltrarmici nel nuovo millennio con quella pietra miliare che è Half-Life. Più o meno nello stesso periodo mi capitò sotto mano Deus Ex e anche qui fu amore a prima vista. Il fantastico inventario di armi e oggetti, la possibilità di personalizzare il protagonista, quasi come si fosse in un RPG furono le cose che più mi colpirono nel gioco. Ma non sono stato solo io ad amarlo: nel 2007 PC Zone lo votò come miglior gioco per PC di tutti i tempi, seguito nel 2011 da PC Gamer. Visto il grande successo furono rilasciati diversi seguito, l’ultimo dei quali, Mankind Divided, uscì nel 2016.

Driv3r (2005)

Genre: Action, Racing

Grant Theft Auto has surely had the merit to blend with an incredible success the driving and action genre and quickly became a reference. Driv3r, third installment in the Driver series follows this very path, but with an improved realism when we talk about the driving stages; however the gameplay is shamelessly similar to tgaht of GTA 3.

Grand Theft Auto fu sicuramente un gioco che ebbe il merito di aver unito con incredibile successo l’azione e il gioco di guida, tanto che fece presto scuola. Driv3r, terzo capitolo della serie Driver si pone su questa falsariga, ma con un maggior realismo per quanto riguarda la parte di guida, ma con un impianto che ricalca in modo abbastanza smaccato quello di GTA 3.
