[2020 with Windows games] Civilizations II / Colin McRae Rally 2.0 / Crysis

Hello guys,

This is the third entry of the [2020 with Windows games] column, a mini-compendium of the mandatory Windows games ever released. For a big part of my life I’ve been a PC games player and I had tons of old games to play with back in the 00s. This is my homage to them.

The rules are simple. Windows rose to a wordwide popularity with the release of Windows 95 in 1995. After this years all of the DOS games became obsolete and Windows impose itself as operative system in the new PCs. As it was for last yeasr column dedicated to DOS games, even for Windows games we will have a selection of three games, one for every five-year period (1995-1999, 2000-2004 e 2005-2009) in alphabetilac order that I consider either important, ground-breaking or simply fun and easy to play. I’ll try to consider only Windows-exclusive games or, in case, games spread on different platforms that have the PC version as a flagship. No claim of completeness, I’m not a human encyclopedia (unfortunately…). Let’s go with letter C.

Questa è la terza puntata della rubrica [2020 with Windows games], un mini-compendio dei migliori giochi per Windows rilasciati. Per gran parte della mia vista sono stato un giocatore da PC e avevo tonnellate di giochi con i quali giocare negli anni Duemila. Questo è il mio modo di omaggiarli.

Le regole sono semplici, Windows ha raggiunto la fama mondiale con il rilascio di Windows 95 nel 1995. Da lì in poi tutti i giochi per DOS divennero obsoleti e Windows si impose come sistema operativo nei computer. Come per la rubrica dello scorso anno dedicata al DOS, anche per i giochi per Windows prendo in considerazione tre giochi, uno per ogni lustro (1995-1999, 2000-2004 e 2005-2009) in ordine alfabetico che considero o importanti di per se o meritevoli per affezione personale. Cercherò di considerare solo giochi esclusivi per Windows o giochi per i quali il porting per Windows risulta essere il più importante. Non ho pretese di completezza. Sfortunatamente non sono un’enciclopedia umana. Via con la lettera C.

Civilization II (1996)

The first Civilization was a huge success that was supposed to be unmatchable but when Sid Meier and co. released Civilization II everybody were blown away. Just to understandm the website IGN.com named it 4th among the best games of all time, the 1st among computer games. Civ II was also a sort of forerunner of Alpha Centauri, other great Sid Meier’s game, since one of the victory condition of the game is reaching Alpha Centauri. In my honest and unquestionable opinion, Civ II wins over Civ I only for graphics 🙂

Il primo Civilization fu un successo mostruoso che si riteneva irripetibile ma quado Sid Meier e soci fecero uscire Civilization II tutti rimasero a bocca aperta. Giusto per comprendere, il sito IGN.com l’ha nominato quarto gioco migliore di sempre, il primo tra quelli per PC. Civ II fu anche il “gancio” per lo sviluppo di Alpha Centauri, altro grosso gioco di Sid Meier, dato che una delle condizioni per la vittoria nel gioco è proprio quella di raggiungere per primi Alpha Centauri. A mio modesto e insindacabile parere Civ II vince su Civ I per la grafica 🙂

Colin McRae Rally 2.0 (2000)

Colin McRae Rally was already a damn good game but with 2.0 Codemasters really made an excellent job, improving graphics and realism even though the difficultyu ramped up. Even for this reason this game still remains a favourite of mine because, as a lover of racing games,when the challenge is tough everything is more satisfying: this is the same reason that periodically brings me back to a masterpiece of difficulty like Grand Prix Legends. Anyway Colin MacRae Rally 2 was both a commercial success (more than 200k copies sold in the UK only) and acclaimed by the critics with reviews between 85 and 90%.

Già Colin McRae Rally era un bel gioco, ma con il 2.0 la Codemasters fece un lavoro davvero eccellente, migliorando grafica e realismo, anche se aumentò parecchio la difficoltà. Anche per questo il gioco rimane uno dei miei preferiti perchè, da amante dei giochi di corse, più la sfida è ardua più è bello superarla: è lo stesso motivo che mi riporta costantemente su un capolavoro della difficoltà come Grand Prix Legends. Ad ogni modo Colin McRae Rally 2.0 fu anche un successo commerciale (più di 200mila copie nel solo Regno Unito) e di critica con recensioni oscillanti tra l’85 e il 90%.

Crysis (2007)

Genre: FPS

Yeah, now I can run Crysis. One of the recurring memes on 2007 born by the steep requirements to run such a game now, more that 10 years later, looks like a joke. However Crysis is still today a remarkable game for its refined graphics and for the sense of freedom of action it gives. Despite the lack of console versions the gama did manage to sell more than a million copies, what led Crytek to release two sequels, this time also available for PlayStation and Xbox.

Sì, adesso il mio PC può far girare Crysis. Uno dei meme ricorrenti del 2007 nato dalla gran richiesta di potenza per far girare un gioco del genere ora, più di dieci anni dopo, sembra uno scherzo. Eppure ancora oggi Crysis impressione per la sua grafica raffinata e per il suo mondo che da un gran senso di libertà d’azione. Nonostante l’assenza di versioni per console, Crysis vendette più di un milione di copie, cosa che spinse la Crytek a rilasciare due seguiti disponibili anche per PlayStation e Xbox.
