[Game of the Week] Week #8 – Hunter the Reckoning – Wayward

Hi folks!

Here we are again with another entry, the eighth, of the [Game of the Week] column and this time the game featured is Hunter the Reckoning – Wayward for PS2!

Developer: High Voltage Software

Publisher: Sierra Entertainment

Platforms: PS2

Genre: Action, Hack ‘n Slash

Release Date: September 9th, 2003

When I began this column I promised to myself to at least try the games the fate decided to talk about week after week (yes, I still use a random number generator to decide the game to feature in the post). Of course one week is not enough to complete it, since I also have a life (almost) but on the other hand a week is enough to play the game, understand its dynamics and see if there’s something good about it.

I confess I had never played Hunter the Reckoning – Wayward before since it was one of the games bundled with the PS2 I’ve bought with my roomates when I was studying at the university (and we’ve bought it only because we wanted to play PES not caring for other games) so I gave this game a try now, after like 10 years, without even knowing what to expect and (honestly) thinking it was nothing short than a boring game.

Well, as it happens with kids when they start to eat vegetables after years spent avoiding them because “I don’t like them” wihtout even trying them, I’ve been rather surprised by this game. I mean it’s not a milestone nor a masterpiece but the gameplay at first seemed to me like the one of Fist of the North Star – Ken’s Rage I’ve played (and completed) last year on PS3. They’re both action games but one is oriented on Ken’s karate while Hunter relies on weapons. Its open environment (sometimes a bit empty I have to admit) let you wander around killing stuff and even though the plot and the gameplay could be a bit dull and repetitive (and in fact the reviews were quite mediocre at the time), it has been a good way to spend a bit of time during a rainy week.

Do you own this game? Have you ever played it? Tell me more in the comments section, let’s discuss!

I’ve got the game on my shelf but have never actually put it in to try it. Cover looked interesting, the back of the box was decent, but I just didn’t find the time. Sounds like a game that’s fun for a few hours but otherwise unforgettable. Maybe I’ll try it sometime, but it’s not at the top of my list 🙂

Neither was it on my list. I’ve been forced by my homemade random number generator algorythm. But it wasn’t all that bad…
