[Game of the Week] Week #5 – Resident Evil 0

Hi folks!

Here we are again with another entry, the fifth, of the [Game of the Week] column and this time the game featured is Resident Evil Zero for Game Cube!

I still don’t own a Game Cube. This is probably the most successful console among the ones I don’t have (even though I shiver when I say “successful” about the GameCube since it was probably Nintendo biggest bomb). On the other hand I have two Wii and one of them is capable to read GC games so if some good GC game pops up online at a decent price I try to get it anyway. At the moment I only own two GC games and, as you may imagine they’re two games I’ve very fond of, Resident Evil and Resident Evil 0. While RE is the more polished version of the original game that is also the “base” for the latter remakes (until the Xbox One version), Resident Evil 0, whose events take place before the events of Resident Evil, was meant to be a Game Cube exclusive, breaking the almost-monopoly of Sony, “house” of the series since the beginning.

The game was later ported on other platforms and received good reviews praising the music score and the spectral atmosphere and represent an attempt to refresh the idea of the classic survival horror introducing new features, like the possibility to play with a partner.

  1. Played it for only a couple of hours it just felt regressive after both Code Veronica on the Dreamcast and Bio Hazard 4 on the cube. It did incorporate character puzzles and arguably implemented playing as both characters more rather than simply a new scenario for each character it just didn’t resonate with me. The story in so much that i experienced seemed thin and the change from more traditional zombies or the infected in 4 to more organic creatures didn’t appeal much to me. I assume that since all the changes to the basic formula employed by 0 haven’t been used since probably means they were a interesting design choice by Capcom but wasn’t what the majority of the fanbase wanted

      Surely Code Veronica and RE4 were better than Zero which by the way has some features ghat make it fun to play. Unfortunately the plot after the first three games has become always thinner but that’s what happens when a franchise get old…

    Zero is certainly one for the classic Resi fans. Arguably one of the harder RE games it has some interesting features, but almost feels like a greatest hits album with classic elements and enemies being paraded out in sequence. It’s a good game, but one for the fans rather than those new to the series.
