Hello old games lovers,
Today is the first day of spring but for the addicted to the RPGs today is the 30th anniversary of Phantasy Star II, released today, March 21st, 1989.
It has been the second installment out of the four “classic” that graced Sega consoles and the first to be released for the Genesis/Mega Drive. At the time it was the biggest game released for the console since it made use of the 6Mbit cartridge. As you can imagine the game was released to a wordwide acclaim that led Sega to release a third game, Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom in 1990 and a fourth, Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium in 1993. In the early Noughties the series debuted to “next-gen” consoles with Phantasy Star Online.

Of this series, I’ve only ever played Phantasy Star IV, but from what I’ve heard of it, Phantasy Star II was quite a step up in video game storytelling, doing things that you just didn’t expect a game to do back then (such as killing off an important character).
