Hello guys,
A couple of weeks ago I’ve got the best surprise ever since I’ve started collecting games.
Since the beginning of the summer I’ve moved all of my stuff, consoles, video games and books in my living room and they stand there in good order, clean and not amassed in the tiny library I had in my bedroom anymore I’ve invited one of my old frieds to have a pizza and play some PES on the PS2 and for the first time he saw my collection and he was quite impressed. His eyes fell on the (alas few) Mega Drive games I own and I’ve awakened his memories about the console he used to own as a child. He hasn’t got it anymore and he really wanted to try again some of the games that defined his childhood and all of a sudden he told me that he still had in his parents basement some old games and that he wanted to give them to me because “on that shelf they’ll be in good company” and moreover he can always come here when he wants to play with them.
So after a week I went to visit my parents who live 1km away from him and we met. He had a bag with 10 games and he wanted nothing for them, he was giving them away for free! Some of them are quite famous, like Sonic 2 but some of them (as I later discovered) were rather uncommon.
So let’s start from the most common.
In the lot there were some of the ubiquitous Mega Drive games: the first is Sonic 2 in its box and in very good condition. I already have the first Sonic game that was the first one I’ve bought together with the console while in London two years ago. Now I only miss the box of the first Sonic and the third volume to complete the original trilogy. In the bunch there was also Ayrton Senna Super Monaco Grand Prix II but it’s just an empty box. Who knows where the game is…
Other two common games are two Disney titles: Quackshot Starring Donald Duck and World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. I’ve noticed Sega had a lot of Disney related or cartoon related titles; the latter of the two completes a mini-series with other two games I own for the Master system, Castle of illusion and Land of Illusion. Another trilogy completed 🙂
Among the cartoon-related games I also have The Flintstones that will be in good company with its “rival” The Flintstones – The Rescue of Dino and Hoppy for the NES.
A game I finally own and that I was trying to get (of course trying to pay almost nothing for it) is Cool Spot. I remember my uncle playing it on his Amiga when I was a child and that game made me love 7UP: a good example of how product placement in video games can influence the young minds 🙂
Based on some reviews on the internet Shaq-Fu is one of those infamous games that are too bad to become good. I’ve never tried it because I’m not a basketball fun and neither I am fan of kung-fu, but the two things together can be something really fun to try.
And now we go to the top three.
The first game is Wonder Boy III Monster Lair which is the 16-bit sequel of the Wonder Boy saga that made its debut on the Master System. I already own Wonder Boy, Wonder Boy in Monster Land and Wonder Boy III Dragon’s Trap so this other title fills the gap in the series; I still need to find a couple of titles to complete it. I loved the games on the Master System so I don’t see any reason not to love this new title for the Mega Drive! The game is in good condition although the manual is missing. The cover looks terrible but it’s just the effect of the light on the box and my bad camera skills…
The second game is Zombies, the PAL version of the Genesis game Zombies Ate My Neighbors. This is one of the biggest surprises of the lot. I’ve heard about the game in the past but I’ve never tried it nor seen any screenshot. I didn’t even know if it was a good or bad game or if it was cheap or expensive. Well, it turned out it’s one of the most valuable game in my collection since if you buy it here complete in box you have to spend 50€ if you’re super-lucky, but you can easily eke out 70-80€ or even 100€ if it’s not your lucky day. This action game should be super fun to play and I really can’t help to try it out 🙂
Third and last (but not least) game of the group is Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles Hyperstone Heist. I knew this one was quite pricey and sought after and to my great surprise is complete and in pristine condition. I’ve tried it for like half an hour to get to grips with the controls and I have to say that its reputation is well deserved. Even this game can be found, if you’re in your lucky day, for 50€ but the prices can arrive up to 100€ for a copy in good conditions.
After I put all the games in place I wondered the value of what I got, just for curiosity. I’ve checked on eBay the last items sold and I’ve taken the least expensive ones and summing up all the prices I’ve been blown away to discover that the minimum (but really minimum) value of them is 160-170€. This means that if you buy all of them in Italy, from an italian seller, without shipping charges and having a huge strike of luck with all of them you pay them 160-170€ but the price can be even way more than 200-250€. And for a lot paid 0€ it’s a great deal!
I’ve promised my friend I would have given him one of the Xbox 360 I own and anytime I’ll have two copies of a game I will give it to him for free. I already have 4-5 titles I can part with so I’m really happy and proud of this swap.
Stay tuned for other updates!

A great find! I loved Quackshot, solid platformer, challenging but lots of fun!

This is an interesting collection of Mega Drive games. I have only played Sonic 2, which I enjoyed. It was lucky that someone was willing to give you an expensive haul of games and only expect a small payment.
Which game was the most expensive? Which game was the cheapest? Which game do you enjoy the most?

Haha, I have Shaq-Fu on the SNES and I played it all the time as a kid because I loved watching Shaq play basketball in real life… haven’t played it in many years. Also Zombies (Ate My Neighbors) is fantastic!
