[RetroPicks] The Legend is here!

Hello guys,

In one of the last posts of the [RetroPicks] column I told you I found a rather cheap (for its standards) copy of The Legend of Zelda 2 – The Adventure of Link.

Well, a few weeks later I found an ad online from an italian guy that was getting rid of his entire collection of games and he was selling it piece by piece and one of these pieces was the original golden cartridge of The Legend of Zelda. I needed a companion for my Adventure of Link becuase he was feeling so lonely being the only golden cartridge in an ocean of grey cartridges so I’ve pleased him and for the not-so-crazy sum of 30€ I’m now the proud owner of the first iconic Zelda title. I think I’m gonna play it by second, because I need to get used to the genre slowly so The Adventure of Link maybe will better fit my tastes, but anyway this is a mandatory game so sooner or later I’ll have to find time to play it.

The Legend of Zelda of course is not the only title I’ve bought and with it came other a bit overlookes games. The first one is Tiger Heli which is a rather straightforward vertical shooting game and Silent Service, that reminds me a bit of 5th Fleet I’ve endlessly played when I was younger. I’ve read that the original game had some issue in Germany because it was so realistic that could have encouraged violence (!). I still haven’t played it but I can bet my own head it’s not so realistic, even compared to 80s standards.

I don’t need to spend a lot of words on Skate or Die for the NES. The games was sold from the same seller for 2€ so I’ve included it in the bunch. They could be even stupid games but if you’re building a collection you can’t turn down a game priced 2€! Regarding Skate or Die, I’ve briefly played its “brother” Ski or Die in PC, I don’t know if it was an official port or a pseudo-amatorial conversion.

Last game but not the least in this list (sorry for the wordplay) is Double Dragon for the Sega Master System. This has been a really lucky purchase since I found this game on auction just 30 seconds before the closing. I had to make a quick decision and for only 6€ I managed to buy the game that partially complete my Double Dragon mini collection. I already have the second and third installment of the series for the NES but I’m missing the first which I have now for the SMS, as well as the copy I already had for the C64. Double Dragon is one of the series I’m not particulary fond of but I keep stumbling upon auctions in which the games of the series are involved and most of times I manage to buy them It’s the same stary with Gauntlet, a game I’ve barely played in the past for which I already own severlar different versions.

Have you found something interesting lately? Let me know!

What beauties! I’m so glad you’ve finally gotten your hands on the original Legend of Zelda. That and The Adventure of Link are so different that I don’t think it matters much which you’d start with. If you don’t care about the chronology, the second game is just as good as the first even though it’s a tough pill to swallow. You can do it! I hope you’ll post about your thoughts when you play them.

Ever try Double Dragon on Atari? That’s a hard game. I can’t even make it out of the first screen, haha!

I need to accumulate some experience to play RPGs so probably being Adventure of Link more action and platform than the first Zelda probably I will start with that.

Wait you mean the Atari 2600? They did DD for Atari 2600???

Yep! I tried it out and it’s a tough one. More tough than most Atari games!

I definitely need to find it! I’ve never seen it online so I think on this side of the ocean it’s quite rare or expensive. Or maybe it’s just my blindness…

Glad you found the first Zelda! I recently grabbed one too. I’m still looking for Link.
I don’t think it matters what order you play them in, but I always have to start with the first game in the series. It’s an OCD thing. But don’t worry, neither of them are really considered serious RPG games so you shouldn’t have any trouble.

I’m also looking for Tiger Heli since it’s one of the few games I had growing up. Nice grab!

I’ve got Silent Hunter and I agree with you, it’s not very realistic at all, even for the time. Odd that it would cause trouble in Germany since it’s set in the Pacific Theatre. My early sub game of choice is Sierra’s Aces of the Deep. Recently I’ve been trying to learn Silent Hunter 3. There’s just something I’m not getting about that game…
