[Picks of the Month] February 2018

Hello guys,

The month of February has been an incredible one on the hunting side since I’ve achieved the first two goals of 2018: 100 NES games and 300 games in total. And this thanks to some strikes of luck, some gift and a lot of patient research of the best price.

So let’s start, as always, with the NES. The incredible amount of 20 games bought during the month had sent me over 100; in these 20 games as always I have some fillers and some good titles. Among the latter ones, not only for their intrinsic value, we have four games: the first is Duck Hunt in its standalone cartridge; this has been quite a surprise for me since I’ve always seen it as a side game of Super Mario Bros. in the most famous 2-games cartridge of the NES, then Dr. Mario, one of the games I had in my NES as a kid and that I was looking at since the beginning of my collecting history, Star Tropics that I’ve briefly played on the NES Mini and Astyanax, of which I’ve read pretty good reviews online.

After the lucky purchase of January I tried to get some games for the two Xboxes and for the Wii in order to try to get in touch with consoles I’ve never even played in my life.

For the Wii came in my help my girlfriend’s brother, way younger then me that had the Wii as a kid. Now he’s grown up and he’s of the PS4 so for him the Wii is more just a memory. He donated to me 7 of the 8 games you see on the list, the eighth, Wii Sport Resort is a lucky acquisition in a second hand market for just 2€. With this console I’ve finally managed to drawn my GF into games. The first evening I’ve hooked up the console we started a session of Mario Kart and Wii Sport Resort 🙂

Since the Xbox I’ve bough last month came without cables and I was unable to test it I decided that it would have been better, instead of buying some expensive and non-original cables and joypads, to buy another Xbox 🙂 And I’m glad I’ve found a Platinum boxed and with everything I needed. For just 30€! And it’s tested and working 🙂 🙂 🙂

Regarding the Xbox, I’ve found games for both of the consoles, the classic Xbox and the Xbox 360. I’m surprised to see that most of the defining games of the consoles are ridiculously cheap, probably because I’m used to the steep prices of NES and SNES games (and sometimes even PS1 games). On the side of the original Xbox I’m happy to have in my collection at least one of the Halo games, the second, a marvellous and pristine Doom 3 Steelbox copy, and Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance II. I still haven’t tried BG, but if it’s half as good as Shadows of Amn it will guarantee weeks and weeks of play.

On the side of the Xbox 360 instead I’m pleased to have Oblivion from the series The Elder Scrolls, one of the thousand Call of Duty, Alien VS Predator, whose PC version scared the s#!t out of me when I was young and, of course, Resident Evil 6.

Despite the number of games bought the lion share this month is represented by the original PS1 Resident Evil Trilogy. This is probably the franchise I love the most probably even more than the Mario one and for me it will be a dream to have one day all the games released on every console ever released, special editions an remastered versions included. For the moment I stick to what I have and these perfect copies of RE1, RE2 and RE3 have been the best purchase of the month.

Even in February there was a small room for the Spectrum games, Bad Dudes VS Dragonninja and Breakthru. I’ve tried in the past months to get Bad Dudes for the NES but I stumbled upon the Speccy version. How could I have turned it down? Another game I haven’t planned to buy is Half-Life 2, but it was sitting on a shelf in an hook shop priced 2€ so I decided to give it a new home next to his father, the first Half-Life.

A library that is quicky increasing its size is the PS2 one, especially after the 10 games bought in February among which some games I loved and some I’ll be most likely to love in the future. I think I will need some weeks off from work to play FFX and FFXII, as well as Max Payne and Deus Ex, two of the FPS I loved the most in the past, Myst III: Exile and, of course, Resident Evil Code: Veronica X. Hopefully one day I will build a Resident Evil-only shelf 🙂

At the moment, If I’ve counted correctly from the italian wiki, there are 47 games (including remakes and remasters) in the Resi franchise, each one available on various platforms, so I think I guess right if I say that in total there are between 150 and 200 different versions. I have 8 of them now. It will be a long struggle.

Good stuff last month! Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 is one of my all-time favorites, as is Oblivion. And Mario Galaxy is actually my recommended game for this week’s Challenge 🙂

Glad to see that my new acquisition are good games! I’ve bougjt Rainbow Six mainly for its name and because it was very cheap but I still need to try it. Actually I have a LOT of games still to try……

  2. I was surprised to see the two Tomb Raider games listed, Is Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness in French? I remember the game with both Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and the silver cover, although I thought it was foil. I remember Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Play, Wii Sports Resort and Medal of Honour Frontline being good games.
Have you played any of the games yet?
