In a franchise it’s usually difficult to replicate the success of the first episode installment, especially it the game to beat is Tomb Raider, which sold 7,5 millions of copies. Well, Eidos did it again and the widely announced and awaited Tomb Raider II hit the shelves in Europe in November 1997: it didn’t top the sales of the forerunner but it was almost there. The press universally praised the game even though for some was too similar the the first Tomb Raider and today we celebrate its 20th anniversary. Lara has changed a lot since then…

I have played this game. I am surprised that it was criticised for being too similar to the original game because I found it a very different game compared to the first Tomb Raider game. I remember this game had a larger amount of weapons available, used vehicles, more enemies were human, some of the locations used in the game were modern, had a bigger range of traps and had a more professional feel. I did prefer some aspects of the original game though.

I have actually always wondered what Lara says after realising that the henchman she finds at the Great Wall is from Venice. I remember she says something like “Ah. Viacarre Venice” and I have wondered what this means. Do you know?
