Welcome to the third entry of this column in which I review forbidden (and forgotten) retro games with adult contents.
A lot of the games that will be revisited here will have, as well as adult themes, some contents that may offend somebody. But please remember, we are here just to re-discover something
rightfully forgotten, so don’t take it so seriously, we don’want to offend anybody. Just have fun and laugh 🙂
Today’s game is a platformer that came out fo various platofrms, Toi Acid Game.
The world is full of platformers and this decuplicates the amount of possible crappy software, and Toi Acid Game is defintely part of it. The game was released in 1989 essentially for four different platforms, MSX, Atari ST, ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC (the C64 version is something very obscure) and we have to consider that the lifespan of these computers were abundantly over: the MSX as a standard came out in the early 80s, the Spectrum was released in 1982 and the Amstrad CPC, after its release in 1984 was about to be discontinued (1990). Iber Software, that developed the game was one of the many spanish companies that tried to gain visibility in the second half of the 80s, when Sir Clive Sinclair started co cooperate with the spanish distributor Investonica, a collaboration that led to the release of the last Spectrum model, the 128.
Toi Acid Game is a platformer with four different “worlds” very different one to the other, set in a discotheque, on the beach, on a pirate’s boat and in the classic mansion.
Iber Software released a bunch of games at the end of the 80s including Sabrina, a game starring the italian
big boobed pop icon Sabrina Salerno I will surely cover in he future.
Why is forgotten?
As I told you the game was released in a time when other platforms started to be more popular: in the copoter field, Amiga was becoming the reference point and playing game at home was always easier due to the rise of some popular home consoles such as NES and Sega Master System (and there were still some atari 2600 around!). Consider also that the game was poorly advertised and released in a country where the games were not so popular. It’s no surprise that nowadays we gave just a few references about it and that almost nobody reminds it.
Why is forbidden?
Our hero Toi is wandering in four different stages and in one of them, the beach, we see some big boobed girls sunbathing in topless. Well, getting excited on Spectrum graphics is hard (even if the Atari ST version is more defined and more alluring), but showing a topless woman in a game targeted to a young audience maybe it wasn’t the best move.
Why is fun?
Despite some unusual stages and unusual “power-ups”, Toi Acid Game is a rather straightforward platformer and platform games are always fun, at least a bit.
How can I play it?
The MSX and Amstrad verisiosn are not so easy but even not impossible to find on the internet, like on eBay and the prices are not so high: you can buy a very good loking and working copy for 10€. The ZX Spectrum and Atari ST versions (this one propably the best looking one) instead are hard to find as well and the C64 version whose existance is questionable. Years later a DOS port was released but (as I know) it was not put on sale: it can be found today for free and can be run ander DOSBox.
Something similar but a bit less crappy???
This is a hard question: there are so many platformers in the history of gaming (good and bad) that is difficulto to indicate just a couple of them, so consider the three games listed below only the tip of the tip of the iceberg. I would recommend one platfoem gaem for each one of the three main systems Toi Acid games was developed for:
- Manic Miner for ZX Spectrum, just because is one of my favourite games on the platform and it’s one of the most recognizable games of the 80s. Here’s my review about it.
- Onslaught for Atari ST, a candidate for a future Forbidden Games feature, for its abundant use of violence and gore;
- The Treasure of Uşas for MSX another almost forgotten game in which the protagonist can also change emotion! 🙂
And finally, if you need other games related to this which is crappy and adult oriented like Toi Acid Game, stick around, more games will be covered soon!
