You may have noticed that in the few days a lot of rumors came out about the new Atari console, the Ataribox.
This time it looks like the former King of video games industry will come back for real. After a teaser shown on 2017 E3, the Ataribox is set to be released sometime in the future, who knows when. Rumors say that it will play new and old games and it will be equipped with a “standard” set of SD card slot, HDMI output and four USB ports. People from my generation maybe won’t be too familiar with Atari since probably the first console they used was an NES but Atari was really the undisputed ruler of the entertrainment wold back then.
Unfortunately after the initial success, Atari had slowly lost shares of market until their last failure, the Atari Jaguar in the mid-90s. Probably, for a twist of fate, the reason of their failure is the success of their masterpiece, the Atari 2600: so ubiquitous and so full of games that it was hard to reply. And then, obviously, there was 1983 video game crash, to which they concur and for which they lost their predominance.
Their consoles after the 2600 sold always less: the 5600, the 7600, the Lynx and eventually the Jaguar; their home computers line unluckily followed the same path.
The Atari story is for some reasons a sad one but now maybe they can inprove the fate of one of the most important brands of all time with their brand new console. At the moment there are only a few confirmed news. For example we still don’t know when it will come out.
But leveranging on the nostalgia effect I’m quite sure it will be in September (maybe not the 11th, the day it was released, since nowadays 9/11 is, unfortunately, a day to remember for other things), just in time to celebrate the 40th anniverstary of the beginning of the modern video games era.
What do you think about it, will you be one of the people who will buy it? Or maybe you think it will be a waste of money and the Ataribox will be one of those “Nerd taxes”, released just to raise some cash?
