Hello old game lovers!

…and happy new year! While yesterday we left 2016 behind with the Diablo 20th anniversary, today we greet the new year with another important anniversary since at the beginning of 1992, so 25 years ago, was released Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty, based on David Lynch movie with the same title based on Frank Herbert 1965 novel.

Dune II is considered one of the first (if not the first) and the most important Real Time Strategy games that christened a proper game style we can find in later games such as Warcraft: Orcs vs. Humans (and the sequel Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness of which you can read my review here).

So all hail to Dune II!!!

  1. Played a lot of this as a youth. I used to play as Ordos due to having a vehicle that could make an enemy vehicle switch sides.

  2. Such a great RTS – loved it back in the days. 🙂 Gameplay was good, but also the storyline and the overall in-game atmosphere. Can’t believe it’s been 25 years! And Happy New Year btw.. 😉

Loved Dune II, played it to death. Great atmosphere, innovative mechanics and a brilliant intro. I’m also one of those people who really liked the sequels Dune 2000 and Emperor: Battle for Dune.

Not sure if you could call Dune II the very first RTS (but then it comes to down to how strict your definition is), but it certainly established the formula that led to games like Command & Conquer, Z, Warcraft and Starcraft.

Yes, it’s always difficult to tell which gae is the first of a genre, sice as always when you name a game there are two-three unknown older games with some content that can be referred to the genre. Let’s say it’s one of the most important and influent among the firsts 😉
