[Editorial] It’s time to Switch!

So, here we are!

After months and months of rumors, speculations and theories, finally the new Nintendo console was unveiled today in a 3-minutes trailer on Nintendo website. Check it out:

The name fo the new project is Switch, and this is the meaning of the idiot wordplay in the title.

The first impression was “Wow, all this stuff together?”. Switch is not a home console nor a handheld: is both. So all the people that rumored that the former NX could have been a home console were wrong as all the people that suggestet that the new Nintendo could have been a portable. Or maybe they wer both right.

After realizing that Switch is more than a common console a couple of questions went through my head.

First: could it be a good thing to have a mix of home/portable console?

I mean sometimes when you have an item that can do a lot of things it’s highly propable that it cannot do all the things in the best way possible. Mayne the big N found out the squaring of the circle and I reeeealy hope so since in March 2017 I will be in front of the store to purchase my own personal Switch.

Second: Is the new switch a bit awkward?

It’s wonderful that with Switch you can do almost everything (maybe) but the design seems a bit, how can I say, “heavy” maybe? Look at the console itself: it looks like a small overnight bag, while the controllers when they’re put together look like a dog face with ears down.

However, these are just two stupid questions: if the Switch will mantain all the things he promised I’m sure it will be another big revolution made by the japanese firm.

Now we all have to wait until March 2017…

Sooooooooooo excited! My only complaint is that there is no real d-pad on the thing. Otherwise, I’m pumped.

I’ve never bought any consoles when they were brand new for myself, but this might be the exception. I think it’s going to be really good, and I can’t wait to hear about what games will come along for this system. As far as I could tell in the video, they haven’t released the type of media (cartridge or disc) just yet eh? I know there were rumours about going back to the cartridges, which has me hopeful for some backwards compatibility with DS and 3DS for use with a television…

All I have are more questions!

A lot of questions! Going back to the cartridges could be a good move for the nostalgic gamers but I don’t think Nintendo could (or would) afford a trick like this. On the other side we have to think that a game on CD/DVD/BR can cost sometimes more than 50-60$ so the cartridge MAYBE won’t be so much more expensive, and plus it won’t have hacking problems.
However neither have I ever bought (whoa, hope this is correct in english and not stupid italian english) a brand new console for myself. What I got are christmas or birthday presents. Even the PS and PS2 I had were second hand consoles. But in this case I think I could make and exception too…

I’m very hyped for the Nintendo Switch! I could see the console/handheld hybrid work out in the long run if say, Pokemon were on it. Then everyone would get the singular Nintendo system, and the fanbase wouldn’t be split between the 3DS and Wii U. Or more accurately, between the 3DS and nothing… If the cost is too high though, it may not work out since parents typically get cheaper handhelds for their kids. So, I could see it either being a move that does extremely well for them or a move that falls flat. Either way, I’m excited for more handheld love!

Rumors says that Switch will have a launch price of 349$ but who knows. A lot of suggestions weee made for the NX and I neverd heard one that was close to reality. Let’s see what the japanese have in store for us…
