[Happy Birthday!] Super Mario 64

September 26th is an important day in gaming history: after the 1986 Castlevania release, 10 years later, in 1996, Nintendo showed to the world his “killer app” Super Mario 64 that just turned 20.

So a huge happy birthday to another piece of history!

Wow, 20 bloody years! Well, we didn’t get Mario 64 in the UK until March 1st 1997, but still… 20 years. Where did they go? It’s still an awesome game, too.

Yes, even in Italy was the same, March 1st, 1997. If I think from 1996 has been passed 20 years I feel older than Noah…

  3. I have played this game. It is slightly surprising to think these games are so old, considering they seemed so advanced when they were released. I find it interesting how, after this game changed the series from 2D side-scrolling journeys into 3D explorations, Mario games have been recently released which resembled the older 2D games.

I have to say I’m tightly close to 2D Mario games but SM64 was a milestone! When I played SM on Nintendo DS and I noticd it was a 2D game i devoured it during Xmas holidays. I was so happy about it!

I’ll never forget the first time I flew around with Mario’s winged hat. The music from the Metal Mario power up was my favourite tune in the game. Such an awesome game and so hard to believe it has been so long!

Man I miss my Nintendo 64, I always loved flying with the hat and getting shot out the cannons to the top of the mountain so i didn’t have to waste my time climbing the mountain too far.

It’s amazing how much better this game played than most, if not all the N64 platformers that came after it. The only one I thought came close was Banjo Kazooie.
