After MAME Monday debut last week with Make Trax, this second episode feautes on of the most famous aracde games of late 80’s, whose extraordinary success still last nowadays, Bubble Bobble!

My loved magazine Retro Gamer in 2004 ranked Bubble Bobble in 12th place in the list of  best games of all-time higlighting especially the wonderful sound department.

First of all the 1-Minute MAME Mini Movie where you can see me playing Bubble Bobble!

Bubble Bobble has been relased during the August of 1986 therefore is 30 years old. The protagonists are two small dragons or dinosaurs with the possibility to spit bubbles.

The thing most of the people don’t know is that they were humans before being transformed in dragons by the evil Baron Von Blubba who kidnapped their girlfriends and force them to wander in the Cave of Monsters for 100 geometrical levels to defeat him.

The caves are populated by different kind of enemies than can be killed trapping them inside the bubbles spitted by the dragons. Once they’re trapped, they can be killed by just colliding with them.

Bubble Bobble

Bubble Bobble is strewn by bonuses and power-ups, being the most famous the fruit that falls into the cave everytime an enemy is killed. Sometimes appears on the screen bubbles with a letter inside with which you can compose the word EXTEND and gain an extra life.

Talkin about all the feature of this game will take an entire day but this is not the place to go in depth, I want you to play the game and discover them by yourself 🙂 (for example have you evaer found the portal?)

This game was ported on almost every kind of console/PC, but I think that the most beautiful port, if not for the game graphics but FOR SURE for the disk/cartridge is the one for the Famicom Disk System: take a look on this picture and tell me you’ve not fallen in love…c’mon try!

Bubble Bobble Famicom Disk

Bubble Bobble was the first game I everd played on an original coin-op upright cabinet, but for a twist of fate it’s the one I’ve never played on computer opr other consoles until I discovered MAME.

  1. I’ve never played this one. To be honest, there were never any arcades around here when I was a child. Makes me want to build an arcade room in my house!

Eh…If I had money and money to spend the first thing I would do will be setting a room in my 5000 square feet house dedicated to arcades and consoles…

      1. Only 5000?! 😉 My daughter has a play room here that might gradually become a gaming room as she gets older! Not nearly big enough for an arcade machine though sadly.

Yeah, let’s be modest, 5000 will be enough. Sometimes I see some old arcade machines sold for a misery; obviously they need to be restored but it’s a pleasant job…

      3. Funnily enough, when we moved house the guy that bought our old place liked to restore arcade machines. That’s beyond my abilities though! I occasionally see some good ones for around £800, but I just don’t have anywhere to put them.

  2. I can’t read anything about Bubble Bobble without that earworm of a song running through my head! Never played it in a MAME. I didn’t even know it was available in that format. I think it’s going to be on the mini NES being released this November!

      1. I cannot wait for that to drop! I want the mini Sega, too. I never had the latter growing up (we were a Nintendo family), but I’m an equal opportunity gamer now 🙂

  3. Nice retrospective! We had Bubble Bobble on the ST, but I don’t recall ever getting too far through the 100 levels!

I’m currently writing an article on Bust-A-Move (aka Puzzle Bobble), the puzzle game that spun off from Bubble Bobble. Hope to have it up in the next few days!

Wonderful, I look forward to read it! If you want fell free to post some pictures of the ST while running Bubble Bobble! I always look after good pictures of good old consoles (one day I will buy all of them…) 🙂

I’m a bit disappointed that this series has more or less gone dormant in recent years. I think a revival would work if it took elements from recent platformers such as the recent Donkey Kong & Rayman games while also balancing them with elements from the original game.

I have a port of the arcade version on one of those Taito compilation games for the playstation2. I was always terrible at it.
